Monster Chess

Huge automated chessboard made with Lego Mindstorms

Now this is truly neat – Lego Mindstorms used to created a huge, automated chess board. Watch the whole video if you have time. It is really neat when pieces turn to allow for others to move. It must have been awesome to write the software for this thing…

Oracle gets it wrong.

In the exact same way that Microsoft is getting the entertainment & mobile division wrong, Oracle just got Java wrong. I just received an email from them titled:

Java *is* Everywhere

Afraid of newer, more robust technologies, with the fear of risking it all and coming up with something even more advanced, they continue to just keep repeating to themselves that Java is everywhere. And it is, but just like Microsoft continually quotes little snapshots in time, they refuse to look at the trends – the acceleration. Stating how big you are now says nothing about the constant or upcoming viability of your product, rather its what you have in the pipeline, what you are executing today to keep inventing tomorrow that is truly relevant. Oracle completely missed this mark. In their email, they sum things up:

Java is everywhere and vibrant. Java isn’t going anywhere because it’s already everywhere. :-)

Could you be more of a coward, Oracle?

Apple to Allow Interpreted Apps on iOS

A good little nugget coming out of WWDC this week, apple seems to have changed their license agreement, which no longer strictly forbids interpreted code. Instead, now, they will allow pre-approved interpreted code. http://www.appleoutsider.com/2010/06/10/hello-lua/
